5 Tips For Managing Your Eczema

Health & Medical Blog

Living with eczema can definitely be frustrating at times. The red patches on your skin not only make you feel self-conscious; they can also be itchy and painful. While it is not possible to cure this skin condition, you can make things easier on yourself. Here are five helpful tips for managing your eczema.

Give Your Skin Extra Attention in the Winter

It is good to always keep your skin hydrated, but it is especially crucial in the wintertime. The winter air can make your skin even drier than normal, worsening your eczema symptoms. Try to moisturize your skin more often in the winter. Apply a moisturizing ointment all over you skin right after you take a shower in the morning and right before you go to bed. It is also helpful to turn on a humidifier because it adds moisture to the air.

Get Rid of Pet Dander

If you have a dog or other furry animal at home, you have to be wary of pet dander. When there is pet dander on your furniture and carpeting, it can irritate your eczema. It is best to keep your pets off your furniture and out of your bedroom. You should also vacuum your carpeting more often to reduce dander.

Try Not to Sweat

Sweating can often aggravate eczema symptoms, so do not allow yourself to get too hot. For example, shower immediately after you get done working out.

Avoid Scratching

Eczema can make your skin itch, so you are probably tempted to scratch it sometimes. However, scratching will only make the itching worse, and may even lead to an infection. When you have the urge to itch, apply some moisturizer to your skin. If that does not help control the itching, ask your dermatologist to prescribe you medicine to stop the itching.

Be Careful With Laundry Detergent

When you have eczema, you also have to be careful about the type of laundry detergent you use. Scented laundry detergents can cause your eczema symptoms to flare up. To avoid any issues, it is best to choose a laundry detergent made for people with sensitive skin.

Eczema does not have to be unbearable to live with. If you follow these helpful tips, you can manage this skin condition effectively. However, if you still get flareups often, you should talk to your dermatologist about prescribing you a medication to help ease the symptoms.
