6 Home Remedies to Treat a Child for Lice

Health & Medical Blog

Lice is common among school age children, but it can quickly spread to adult family members at home. If your child has lice, it is imperative that you take action to prevent this from occurring. You can opt to purchase a lice kit, but some parents are opting for home remedies. Here are some of the more popular home remedies.

  1. Mayonnaise. Your child's scalp and hair has to be completely covered by the mayonnaise. He or she will need to wear a shower cap for several hours in an attempt to smother the lice. If you opt for this option, you will have to closely monitor your child to ensure the cap does not cover his or her face.

  2. Olive oil. As with the mayonnaise, the olive oil needs to be applied and then covered with a shower cap. In addition to this, you will have to use a comb to remove the nits from your child's hair. The olive oil does not necessarily remove the lice, but it does make removal a bit easier.

  3. Hair dryer. Wash your child's hair and place him or her under a stand hair dryer. The heat from the dryer supposedly helps to kill the lice. Unfortunately, the heat helps more in killing nits than the live lice.

  4. Water. Some parents have turned to attempting to drown the lice by having their children soak their heads in water for long periods of time. This might work, but there is a catch. Lice can hold their breath for 30 minutes or longer.

  5. Hair-styling gel. The gel works to smother the lice, but you have to completely covers your child's hair with the gel and thoroughly wash it out when it is time to remove it. The styling gel is often seen as an alternative to petroleum jelly, which is commonly used for killing lice.

  6. Vinegar. Vinegar has an acidic quality that helps to remove sticky substances from surfaces. In this instance, the vinegar is thought to remove the substance that allows the eggs to stick to the hair. If you choose this method, you will still have to comb through your child's hair.

There is no guarantee that any of these methods will work. To ensure that your child is completely clear of the lice, consider consulting with a lice-treatment center. Professionals with experience in removing lice can treat your child's hair and scalp and offer tips for protecting your child in the future.

Saving Money On Medical Equipment

When I first got married, I didn't think twice before swiping my credit card. Unfortunately, this attitude caused my spouse and I to get into serious financial trouble early on, especially after a medical situation. Soon, we found ourselves struggling to pay the bills, even though we both worked full-time. After a financial intervention from a few of our family members, we learned ways to save money on everything from groceries to medical equipment. Because the cost of healthcare can be staggering, we decided to create a website dedicated to helping you save money on your medical expenses. I hope that as you peruse the articles on our website, you can find a few tips to save some cash.
